The meeting, held on 1 and 2 October, brought together rectors and members of the partner universities, as well as researchers and academic leaders from other European higher education institutions, united by a common purpose: to strengthen international cooperation and to define the roadmap for the future of the alliance.

This strategic and decisive meeting consisted of two days of intensive work. The agenda on the first day (Wednesday, 1 October) began with an institutional meeting between the Rector of the host university, Andrzej Szarata, and the members of the STARS EU Commission, composed of the rectors and representatives of the partner universities: DickPouwels – President of Hanze University of Applied Sciences; Francisco Javier García Rodríguez – Rector of University of La Laguna,; Mats Jägstam – Rector of University West; Tomas Gongol – Rector of Silesian University of Opava; Orlando Rodrigues – President of Bragança Polytechnic University; Shkëlqim Fortuzi – Rector of Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës, and Hugues Daussy – President of Marie and Louis Pasteur University.

Governance models

There was a “shared feeling” regarding the need to move towardsimproved governance, one that places greater emphasis on the alliance. Another key point on which the rectors agreed was the need to go further to ensure that joint work continues, regardless of the continuation of the financial support provided by the European Union (EU). Possible ways to achieve stronger unity among the nine universities of the alliance were discussed.

Later that same day, 1 October, a joint meeting was held between the STARS EU Steering Committee, where discussions focused on the governance of the alliance, the third draft of the Research Solutions Agenda, the presentation of the STARS EU Campus Charter, and the work plan for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The day also included a stimulating visit to the At the Environmental Aerodynamics Laboratory they were presented with projects on wind energy, smog research, air purification systems, and the resilience of structures under extreme weather conditions. At the Ultra-Precise Coordinate Measurement Laboratory, they learned about equipment used in advanced research for the aerospace, defence, and microprocessor industries. At the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the delegation was shown projects related to hydrogen- and methane- powered vehicles, including prototypes designed and built by CUT students.

This is how STARS EU participated in the European Researchers’ Night, an event held simultaneously in 25 countries and more than 460 cities to showcase science in a more informative and approachable way.

As the general coordinator of the alliance Dick Pouwels highlighted, for all the members of STARS EU it is very important that “research does not stay within universities, but that we put our experience and knowledge at the service of society”. And a good example of this are the research initiatives that allow the public to approach three key areas: healthy ageing, clean energy and entrepreneurship with a European impact.

Health and technology for the elderly

The researcher at the University of La Laguna, Sara Darias-Curvo, presented a project (STARS-Health) focused on improving digital literacy and health of the elderly, especially in rural areas. The aim of the project, in which several STARS partners are involved, is to adapt existing applications to the real needs of these people to facilitate their day-to-day lives and that of their caregivers. “The first thing is to listen to the population and then design tailor-made solutions,” Darias stressed.

Hydrogen, the energy of tomorrow

From the French region of Franche-Comté, the researcher at the Marie et Louis Pasteur University (France), Samir Jemei, and the dean Jan Jaap Aué, from the Hanze University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands), showed how they work on sustainable mobility, electrolysis and energy storage, united by a common horizon: to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The key?, the international collaboration: “By sharing knowledge, we learn from each other and accelerate change.”

Entrepreneurship with European impact

The third axis of the night was entrepreneurship, by researcher Ariola Arizi, from Aleksander Moisiu University (Albania), the alma mater of the BETTER project. Backed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, its initiative supports startups, students and researchers in sustainability, digitalisation and health. “We are training the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators and, to do this, international collaboration is essential in opening up opportunities for all.”

Europe, a network of collaboration

The event left a common and forceful message: research is not an isolated matter, but a living tool to transform the present and the future. When Europe works together, the speakers agreed, it empowers people and transforms their regions, the motto and spirit of STARS EU.

The working meeting, which will bring together around 180 people from the nine partner universities in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), is a further step in the strategy that the alliance has been developing since the end of October 2023, the date of its official consolidation.

The event will be held at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (ESIT) and will feature plenary sessions, thematic workshops, meetings of the different working groups and networking spaces aimed at coordinating strategies and advancing in the projects and objectives of the alliance. The agenda also includes social activities, designed to strengthen integration between participants and create synergies that result in the work dynamic. These include a guided tour of the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a gala dinner.

Registration for the meeting is open until 30 September 2025 and can be done through the official registration form, accessible from the following link: https://sites.google.com/ull.edu.es/stars-eu-project-meeting-2025/home?utm_source=chatgpt.com, where you can consult the planned work agenda, as well as useful and interesting information about the city and the island.

Work dynamics

This event is in addition to the working meetings that the alliance has been holding at the different partner universities, located in Spain, Sweden, Albania, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Poland and Portugal. All of them are aimed at intensifying scientific collaboration, strengthening academic networks and advancing the great common objectives: digital transformation, green transition, social value and well-being and educational innovation.

Some of the most recent examples are the last Project Meeting at the Hochschule Bremen-University of Applied Sciences (Germany), which took place in November 2024, or the STARS EU Annual Congress hosted by the Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës (UAMD), located in Albania, held in March of this year.

Appointment in Tenerife

This is the second time that the STARS EU partners have met at the University of La Laguna. The first was in March 2023 ─ when it was still aspiring to achieve the European University seal ─ on the occasion of its annual conference, which meant “a clear strengthening of the network and its working groups”.

This event in Tenerife “represents a key opportunity to continue consolidating the progress made in these almost two years of activity, share good practices and strengthen ties between partner universities”, as pointed out by the coordinator of STARS EU at the University of La Laguna, José Sigut.

Sigut also remarked that the boom and consolidation experienced by European university alliances in the last two years has made them a “strategic pillar for the European Higher Education Area, especially in the promotion of transnational cooperation, academic innovation and the creation of joint degrees”, an aspect on which STARS EU is already working.

Led by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, together with the universities of La Laguna (Spain), West (Sweden), Silesian (Czech Republic) and Bragança (Portugal), STARS-Health officially began its journey with a workshop held in Groningen (the Netherlands). The event also included an online launch, joined by patient organisations, healthcare professionals, educators and researchers.

The STARS -Health team holds the alliance flag at Hanze University of Applied Sciences.

Opening the session, Rima Dijkstra, STARS EU coordinator, highlighted the importance of collaboration in initiatives of this kind, which are so vital to society. This was further emphasised by Prof. Dr Hans Hobbelen, researcher and professor at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, who warned about the growing number of older adults against a backdrop of a progressively shrinking healthcare workforce — a challenge that underlines the urgent need for projects such as this.

The session continued with presentations, follow-up and updates on the project — developed within the framework of the Thematic Interest Group (TIG) Healthy Ageing — led by the different Work Package leaders. Throughout, participants reaffirmed their strong commitment to the shared mission: to empower older adults with low health literacy by improving access to and use digital services.

Project phases

The first phase of STARS-Health focuses on analysing the current situation of older adults, informal caregivers and healthcare professionals struggling with digital tools. The second phase involves conducting interviews in Sweden, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal.

The project will only select digital applications that meet strict usability criteria for older adults, co-create a digital environment in which users and professionals can jointly select the most suitable apps, and develop training programmes to support professionals in guiding both older adults and their caregivers.

In addition to the professionals involved, students will play an active role by identifying and classifying apps in their own countries — a clear example of co-creation in action. STARS-Health will also collaborate with @Label2Enable and other European initiatives such as #Care about IT, #Health Noord, #HealthTech in Society and #Proeftuin Toegankelijke Digitale Zorg, which work towards more accessible and inclusive digital healthcare. These synergies broaden the project’s reach and reinforce its impact across Europe.

Research team

The project’s research team, comprising five of the nine partners of STARS EU along with the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), is led by Prof. Dr Johannes Hobbelen and Dr. Sandra Jorna-Lakke (Hanze University of Applied Sciences); Margareta Karlsson (University West); Rui Pedro Lopes (Polytechnic Institute of Bragança); Sara Darias-Curvo (University of La Laguna); Markéta Skalná (Silesian University in Opava); and Lilisbeth Perestelo-Pérez (Canary Islands Health Service).

STARS-Health will run for three years with funding of €912,060, granted by the European Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS). This is a co-funded action under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Framework Programme (2021–2027) of the European Union.

The meeting aimed to intensify scientific collaboration in two areas of excellence: Production Technology and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL).

During the two days, participants shared experiences, presented research lines and explored potential joint projects in fields such as robotics, electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, health sciences and pedagogy. The working environment fostered the emergence of new academic networks and the design of common strategies to address challenges in higher education and industry.

The programme included presentations on advanced production technologies, campus visits, networking sessions and an official dinner. The second day focused on the research environment in WIL, with special emphasis on the application of innovative methodologies in artificial intelligence, information systems and applied local development.

Synergies and collaborations

The workshop made it possible to identify synergies and pave the way for strong and competitive collaborations between universities, as highlighted by Per Assmo, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Internationalisation at University West: “The member universities of STARS EU collectively offer both breadth and depth, providing the potential for strong and competitive transdisciplinary research partnerships.”

The event coincided with the annual EAIE conference in Gothenburg, making it easier for researchers to attend both meetings and broaden their contacts within the European academic space.

Everything you need to know to make your project a winning proposal is included here: the keys to submitting proposals, the deadlines to bear in mind, the minimum number of partner universities, the eligible expenses, and the submission procedure. All of this is designed to encourage solid and well-structured proposals.

With these fundamental guidelines, researchers and PhD candidates will be able to optimise their competitive proposals for European programmes such as Horizon Europe and the upcoming FP10, through specialised advisory services and financial support. To achieve this, it is essential to emphasise the clarity of the idea, the multidisciplinary approach, and the alignment with the Priority Areas of the alliance.

Financing

Each participating university may receive up to EUR 3,000 for RIA, IA and Cofund calls, and EUR 2,000 for CSA actions. The funding may be used to cover costs related to international consortium meetings, travel for external partners, external consultancy services, support for specific proposal writing, proofreading, and document design.

To address any queries, the alliance organised a series of informative activities, including a webinar and explanatory documents. The first webinar was hold on 11 June, led by Carl-Fredrik Miles, member of the STARS EU Steering Committee and project manager for STARS EU at University West. People interested in see it can do it link here: starseu.org/guidelines-for-stars-eu-seed-grant-for-research-and-innovation-project-proposals/. The second one will possibly take place in October or November 2025.

The STARS EU Funding Expert Group will evaluate the submitted proposals based on specific criteria, including clarity of the project idea, relevance, feasibility, and multi-disciplinarity, among other aspects. Once the proposals are assessed, the committee will notify applicants of its decision within a maximum of three weeks.

Funding will be disbursed only after the official submission of the proposal via the relevant Horizon Europe or FP10 portal, together with a financial report and a copy of the submitted application.

The 30 or so students worked in interdisciplinary teams at Hochschule Bremen (HSB) – City University of Applied Sciences, partner of STARS EU Alliance, on projects supported by regional partners from the fields of culture and art. The winning team developed a smartphone game that allows users to discover and interactively experience art in public spaces.

The workshop in the summer semester of 2025 was one of the results of the three-year cooperation project ‘IGNITION’. It connects European universities and promotes innovative teaching formats. The intensive workshop week in the innovative FreiRaum@HSB and the hybrid final event offered students a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in game development, intercultural collaboration and challenge-based learning. The event was organised by Professor Andreas Teufel from the Media Informatics course at Faculty 4 – Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at HSB. ‘The project was a proof-of-concept for our new didactic concepts, which combine hybrid teaching with intensive workshop work,’ explains Andreas Teufel.

‘Much more fun than the traditional course structure’

The positive feedback from the students emphasises the success: ‘It was one of the best courses I’ve attended at HSB,’ says one student looking back. Someone else from the workshop commented: “The concept is great and much more fun than the traditional course structure I’m used to. I really enjoyed the one week of the workshop as it allowed you to fully concentrate on your project with little to no distractions. It felt like a great experience and not just another course.”

Students from three STARS EU partners

Students from the three STARS EU partners Instituto Politechnico de Bragança in Portugal, Hanze University in Groningen (Netherlands) and HSB were involved. They were joined by exchange students from Norway, Turkey and Luxembourg, who are spending their summer semester at HSB. They came from the Media Informatics, Design, Computer Science and Business Administration (BWL) degree programmes. An online phase in April and May was followed by an intensive week of workshops at Hochschule Bremen in June at FreiRaum@HSB. The event officially ended at the end of June with a hybrid closing event.

The partners from Bremen’s cultural scene: The Günter Grass Foundation Bremen, the Verein zur Förderung des Welterbes Rathaus und Roland in Bremen, the Städtische Galerie Bremen and the Wilhelm Wagenfeld Haus took part as partners from Bremen’s cultural scene.

About IGNITION

IGNITION is a research project of the STARS EU partners Hanze Groningen (Netherlands, lead partner), Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (Portugal) and Hochschule Bremen (HSB) together with the South East Technological University (SETU) in Waterford (Ireland).

The acronym IGNITION stands for European DIGital Literacy Coalition for Inclusion, Collaboration aNd InnovaTION. ‘The aim of IGNITION is to provide our lecturers with concrete didactic tools and technological support to enable curricular teaching in international and hybrid settings,’ says project leader Professor Andreas Teufel, Dean of Studies at Faculty 4 – Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. ‘This will not replace our core expertise of teaching in small groups and practical tasks in the seminar room and laboratory, but it will expand our possibilities.’

Programme and activities

The research workshop will take place on 8 and 9 September 2025 at the university’s campus in Trollhättan (Sweden). The programme will begin on Monday 8 with a lunch and an institutional welcome by Vice-Chancellor Mats Jägstam and Professor Per Assmo, Head of Internationalisation. This will be followed by presentations on the main research focus areas in Production Technology, including robotic welding, simulation, electrical and electronic engineering, as well as the doctoral programmes linked to these fields.

In the afternoon, STARS EU alliance partners will take the floor to present their research lines in a session designed to identify common interests and pave the way for new collaborations. The day will conclude with a campus tour, a networking session and an official dinner.

Tuesday 9 will be dedicated to the research environment in Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), with presentations focusing on artificial intelligence, information systems, pedagogy, health sciences and applied local development. The day will end with a discussion session on future collaborations within the alliance and a lunch featuring a showcase of international education programmes offered by University West.

The workshop is free of charge and includes meals. Participants may apply for funding through the ERASMUS+ programme to cover their travel and accommodation expenses, reinforcing the alliance’s commitment to accessibility and academic exchange.

This event also coincides with the annual EAIE conference in Gothenburg, making it easier for attendees to participate in both events and broadening networking opportunities across the European space.
