From the point of view of energy sovereignty, “Is it possible for an island territory like the Canary Islands to produce all its energy to operate autonomously?“, the leader of the TIG Energy Transition explained that the islands have a condition of fragility in terms of sustainability and a high external energy dependence, a common denominator in the more than 300 inhabited islands in Europe.

Taking international experiences such as the case of Hawaii as a point of reference, the study presented by Benjamín González warns that decarbonisation cannot be limited only to a change in technologies, but must be accompanied by structural transformations in planning, grid management and the consumption model.

Large grids versus microgrids

The research compares large interconnected grids with microgrids or isolated energy systems such as that of the Canary Islands. While large grids offer economies of scale and greater stability, island microgrids have greater autonomy, flexibility and resilience. On the contrary, they face higher costs, as well as capacity constraints and operational challenges.

According to the renewable energy expert, the road to climate neutrality in the Canary Islands requires the electrification of public transport, the construction and rehabilitation of buildings with high energy efficiency standards, and the prohibition of the use of fossil gas.

Addressing the climate challenge also involves developing distributed renewable projects (battery storage and collective self-consumption) and carrying out energy planning that includes desalination, due to the growing demand for electricity that this entails.

In the Canary Islands, this transition is linked to key factors as important as water scarcity, electric mobility ─ which requires a rethinking of infrastructures and public policies ─ and the incorporation of green hydrogen.

“The real challenge for the Canary Islands is not only to change sources, but to guarantee real energy sovereignty, adapted to our geographical and social conditions,” explained González. The STARS EU member stressed that this fact implies generating more resilient, local and sustainable models, in addition to all the agents involved, citizens, public administrations and universities, acting in a coordinated manner.

González’s talk has put the finishing touch to this edition of STAR Talks, the open online seminars of STARS EU in which knowledge and initiatives that support the development of European regions are addressed from different points of view. Organised by the Challenge Lab, this edition was attended by seven experts from the member universities of the alliance, and specialized in different fields of research.

The closing event was attended by 26 students from the Cracow University of Technology (Poland), Bragança Polytechnic University (Portugal), Marie et Louis Pasteur University (France) and Hanze University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands) — members of STARS EU — as well as about a dozen academics and another European institutions.

The diversity of specialisms — architecture, computer science, management and art history — has been one of the key assets of this Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), which started in the first quarter of 2025 (in person) and continued until June (online).

Using posters and panels, the students (in person and online) presented three specific urban concepts for Zakliczyn that promote local development and boost the expansion of tourism in the area, which is home to resources such as the Dunajec River, Zakliczyn Market Square, examples of sacral architecture, the ruins of Melsztyn Castle and the Krzysztof Penderecki European Music Centre in Lusławice.

Students’ proposals

Some of the suggestions put forward by the students highlight ideas for the pedestrian bridge, with visualisations and physical models, the design of a new website and possible internet infrastructure solutions intended for tourists visiting Zakliczyn. Alongside these contributions, the marketing plan designed for the municipality, a key result of this BIP, is a very important document: a total of 130 pages encapsulating exhaustive analysis and original ideas to showcase the potential of this charming city.

The concepts proposed by the students received praise from the Mayor of Zakliczyn, Dawid Chrobak. “The collaboration between Zakliczyn and Cracow University of Technology began with the idea of designing a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Dunajec River, connecting the castle ruins in Melsztyn to Zakliczyn. That was the starting point. However, the students developed extensive, professional marketing and urban planning documents that go far beyond the initial goal of enhancing the tourism potential of Zakliczyn and nearby towns. We plan to present the results — i.e., the concepts of the bridge and public spaces — to the local council and community,” said Mayor Chrobak.

Evaluation by the authorities

At the event, which took place in the Faculty of Architecture, the “high quality” of the work carried out by the architecture students of CUT, as well as their fellow students from the partner universities, was highlighted. The students worked on urban solutions aimed at uncovering the identity of a small but beautiful town with a rich past, outstanding cultural heritage and a strong musical tradition, particularly in the context of the Krzysztof Penderecki European Music Centre.

The architectural task consisted of designing a bridge to connect Zakliczyn with Melsztyn Castle. The students from the University of Bragança developed marketing strategies, with spatio-temporal solutions based on a city game, explained the academic supervisor, Dr hab. inż. arch. Kinga Racoń-Leja, Prof. PK.

The Mayor of Zakliczyn stated that the suggested proposals will be implemented in the city and stressed “the enormous professionalism” of the students’ work, who, as supervisors involved in developing these concepts, will present their results to the authorities and the local community in the coming months.

For her part, the Vice-Rector, Dr hab. inż. Katarzyna Bizon, expressed her satisfaction with the result shown by the groups of students in their final presentations, filled with great creativity, and with the successful conclusion of an international collaboration project such as FutureLab.

An innovative pedagogical model

FutureLab Camp is not the first of the international educational projects in which students from CUT’s Faculty of Architecture are involved, within the framework of STARS EU. As part of the Thematic Interest Group (TIG) Living Spaces, these workshops have been underway regularly since last year, thereby boosting the internationalisation of the education process.

“This kind of project is filled with pedagogical value, but it also poses a challenge, both for the students and for the professors, as it requires considerable effort, collaboration in other languages and with groups from different cultures, and the ability to provide solutions that are relevant to external stakeholders,” stressed Dr inż. arch. Ernestyna Szpakowska-Loranc. The expert also explained that this edition presented an even greater challenge, as the work was carried out in interdisciplinary groups.

Future editions: France and Portugal

The agreements reached in STARS EU guarantee the continuity of this Blended Intensive Programme. The next meetings will take place in France in 2026 and in Portugal in 2027. “We have been working for months alongside our partners on the framework for the next edition, based on the experiences of Kraków and Zakliczyn, where we have demonstrated that working in interdisciplinary and international groups is effective and brings tangible benefits to all involved,” said Adam Sadło, leader of Task 2.5 in STARS EU.

As part of the FutureLab Camp workshops, 26 students from the Krakow University of Technology and foreign universities belonging to the European STARS EU alliance worked on Zakliczyn’s concepts.

The workshops, which took place in person at the Krakow University of Technology, involved students from the Krakow University of Technology, the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (Portugal), the Marie and Louis Pasteur University (France), and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands). The main task of the students was to define the problems related to tourism in Zakliczyn and to propose modern concepts to take advantage of the opportunities present in and around the city, including the reconstruction of the cycle-pedestrian bridge over the Dunajec River, which leads to the ruins of the castle in Melsztyn.

The participants were divided into three working groups, led by: dr. hab. inż. arch. Kinga Racoń-Leja, Prof. PK, and dr. inż. arch. Ernestyna Szpakowska-Loranc, from the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture of Urban Structures at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology, with the support of Professors Joao Pereira, from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, and coordinators Lorene Keram and Robin Roche, from Marie and Luis Pasteur University.

Adam Sadło, who works at FutureLab PK and is the leader of the WP 2.5 working group within STARS EU, was responsible for cooperation with partners and coordination of the entire Blended Intensive Erasmus+ Programme. The format in which the participants of the FutureLab Camp – Blended Intensive Programme Erasmus+ (BIP) worked is intensive programs focusing on selected scientific issues, utilizing innovative teaching methods. Such activities are organized in collaboration with several (a minimum of three) universities affiliated with the Erasmus+ program. The BIP program consists of a virtual and a stationary part (BIP participants from different universities meet at one university).

Getting to know the local culture

The work within the FutureLab Camp began with a study visit to Zakliczyn, during which students met with Mayor Dawid Chrobak and representatives of local cultural institutions. After the presentation and discussion about the characteristics of the municipality and potential strengths to be utilized, the participants visited the Zakliczyn market square, the historic church, the ruins of the castle in Melsztyn, and the European Centre for Krzysztof Penderecki’s Music in Lusławice.

After acquiring a valuable dose of knowledge, the students began conceptual work. The teams consisted of individuals focused on various project aspects: architecture, IT management, international business, art, and culture. Such multidisciplinary collaboration allowed participants to propose unique and complex concepts.

It was attended by the rector of the Cracow University of Technology, Andrzej Szarata, the STARS EU coordinator at CUT, professor Dariusz Bogdał and the director of FutureLab CUT, Monika Firlej.” Working within the framework of Blended Intensive Programs is more than just learning through project activities. It is also an opportunity for intercultural exchange, which the European Commission encourages in its recommendations. We proposed an interesting program for the students, which also includes meetings after classes, joint games of bowling and billiards, visiting Wieliczka and Kraków, and experiencing the flavours of Polish cuisine. This is particularly important when building teams that, after the physical component, will continue to work together online until mid-June 2025”, says Adam Sadło from FutureLab PK.

On the last day of classes, Monday, March 3, the final presentations of the developed concepts took place. The special guest of the day was Kazimierz Dudzik, the director of the Zakliczyńskie Center for Culture. The expert declared that he would try to use some of the presented ideas in his work. The final presentations also took place under the watchful eye of experts from the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology – prof. dr. hab. inż. arch. Sabina Kuc, dr. inż. arch. Wojciech Wójcikowski, prof. PK, dr. inż. Stanisław Czernik, and dr. inż. arch. Agnieszka Wójtowicz-Wróbel, Vice-Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of Architecture.

Months of work ahead

The group work of the teams will continue for the next three months, and the detailed concepts will be provided to Zakliczyn for use by mid-June. “I am proud of the work our university students have done together with their foreign colleagues. I have known for a long time that multidisciplinary work on specific solutions for cities and businesses brings tangible results, as we deal with supporting such groups every day at FutureLab PK. Bringing the FutureLab idea to an international level is, for me personally, the greatest recognition of the work we have been doing with students and researchers at the Cracow University of Technology for six years”, summarizes Monika Firlej, director of FutureLab PK.

The agreement regulating the cooperation between the municipality of Zakliczyn and the Cracow University of Technology was signed in January 2025 by professor Andrzej Szarata, the rector of PK, and Dawid Chrobak, the mayor of Zakliczyn. Everyone agrees that, thanks to its convenient location, Zakliczyn is an ideal place for investments, especially in tourism.

“We are very pleased with the potential that lies in the cooperation between our university and such a dynamically developing municipality. Especially with the opportunity this cooperation creates for students of the Polytechnic and our partner foreign universities. Workshops dedicated to Zakliczyn are another example of modern education that we promote at the Polytechnic, which is education through the implementation of projects with practical applications for local communities. These dedicated to Zakliczyn – as the mayor conveys – have a chance to inspire real changes in the municipality”, said the rector of CUT at that time.

The research initiative, called STARS-Health, led by the Hanze University (The Netherlands) together with University of La Laguna (Spain), the Evaluation Unit of the Canary Islands Health Service (SESCS-SCS), University West (Sweden), Silesian University of Opava (Czechia), and Polytechnic University of Bragança (Portugal), seeks to help older patients to understand and use digital services in order to prevent and manage health conditions, empower patients and improve communication with their caregivers.

All these measures are ultimately aimed at contributing to reducing inequalities in access to healthcare, the ultimate goal of STARS-Health, the first project of the alliance in which five partner universities participate, financed with European funds, whose overall budget amounts to almost one million euros.

To achieve the objectives set, an application called FindMyApps, originally developed for people with mild dementia, will be redesigned for older adults with Lower Health and Digital Literacy (LHDL). In addition to this application, the project addresses the development of training programs aimed at caregivers in primary, hospital and community care environments.

In the development of integrated care, it is essential to take into account a series of specific cares, which is why STARS-Health project starts with the identification of the needs of elderly patients with LHDL, as well as those of their caregivers; the review of digital services designed for these people; the redesign and implementation of FindMyApps and specialized communication training for professionals specialized in elderly care.

As indicated by those responsible for STARS-Health, developed within the scope of the Thematic Interest Group (TIG) Healthy Ageing, the results of this project will not only have an impact on the health of older adults with LHDL, but will also contribute to relieving pressure on health and primary care centers, and improving communication between patients and caregivers. “The objective is to promote secondary and tertiary prevention in primary, hospital and community care for these people.”

Promotion of new prevention strategies

The initiative will also provide a boost for new prevention strategies and improve equity in access to health care, especially for residents in rural areas. Another of its benefits is the possible reduction of pressure on the health and care system, brought about by the improvement of caregivers’ performance and job satisfaction due to the use of support tools.

Many of these caregivers and patients have difficulty finding, understanding or using health information in digital media, so they need an integrated and effective health care system to guide them on their journey from hospitals to community care services.

The fact that 42% of the population in Europe has a low level of health literacy influences the quality of care, increases pressure on health systems and exacerbates inequalities, especially in rural areas. Recent data indicate that lower patient health literacy is linked to a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, hospitalisations and doctor visits, a fact that puts pressure on the health care system’s secondary and tertiary prevention programs.

Research team

The team of researchers of the project, in which five of the nine partners that make up STARS EU participate, is headed by Sandra Jorna-Lakke (Hanze), the project leader and coordinator; Hans Hobbelen (Hanze University of Applied Sciences); Margareta Karlsson (University West); Rui Pedro Lopes (Polytechnic University of Bragança); Sara Darias-Curvo and Ángel Acebes (University of La Laguna); Yvetta Vrublova (Silesian University in Opava), together with the Canary Islands Health Service, represented by Lilisbeth Perestelo-Pérez.

STARS-Health, which starts next April, will last three years and has funding of 912,060 euros, granted by the European Association for the Transformation of Health and Care Systems (THCS). This is a co-financing action that is developed under the framework of the European Union’s (EU) Horizon Europe Research and Innovation (R+I) Programme for the period 2021-2027.

Representatives from all nine STARS EU partners met at University West, in Sweden, to draw up a strategic plan for the coming years.

We asked four questions to Mikael Ericsson, senior researcher in robotics and automation at University West, who leads the TIG.

The TIG Sustainable Industry is a relatively new TIG. What are your goals?

Today, the European industry faces major challenges that will affect its future. These areas are connected to new technology development, digital and energy transformation, and climate change. Also, to increase competitiveness between countries and companies outside Europe, the EU and industry must focus on regional and national value chains to shorten transportation and services linked to manufacturing various products.

These challenges affect competitiveness and opportunities for transformation and renewal. The TIG Sustainable Industry will support students and researchers, industry, and society with new and innovative technology and competencies by developing courses and starting new research cooperations and projects to meet the challenges faced by industry in Europe. These activities will generate and share new knowledge with the surrounding community.

What was the purpose of the meeting?

This was the first time the TIG had a face-to-face meeting with all partners participating. The main purpose was to get to know each other. Secondly, we wanted to discuss our strategic plan for the TIG for 2025 and 2026. Another aspect was to show the facilities at University West that could be of relevance to the Sustainable Industry TIG.

What were the most important points discussed during the meeting?

In the development of the plan, we were discussing how we can develop BIPs and micro credential courses, double degree programs and joint research projects. We also discussed how we can contribute to mobility, both for students and for staff, between our universities, and updated ourselves on future calls for research funding within the EU.

What will the focus of the TIG in the coming months?

We will work with the implementation of the plan, focusing on courses and double degree programs. We will also plan for upcoming research calls by trying to set up a consortium with common research interests.

Just a year after the European Commission approved the STARS EU alliance’s project to become an European University, 130 people from all nine academic institutions involved in this initiative have joined together at the Hochschule Bremen on 5 and 6 of November, in order to review the advances made so far by the eight work packages, the Thematic Interest Groups (TIG), the Students Board and the Steering Committee.

During the presentation of these two working days, the general coordinator of the alliance, Rima Dijkstra, explained that after this first year of work the project has evolved and will have three priority areas of action: Green Transition, Digital Transformation, and Social value and Welfare. The activities of the alliance’s nine thematic interest groups will be organized around them, namely: Circular Economy; Energy Transition; Living Spaces; Sustainable Industry; Entrepreneurship & Innovation; Digital Transition; Arts & Creative Industries; Inclusion & Social Justice; and Healthy Ageing.

In this first year of work, the foundations have been laid to give impetus to the creation of joint academic titles, with a provisional catalogue of 60 teaching initiatives of different types in the development phase or about to be taught.

Several requirements of the European Commission for the development of the project have also been fulfilled such as the elaboration of the communication plan and the branding of the alliance, the open science strategy for the dissemination of the research developed within STARS EU, the creation of the Technology and Knowledge Transfer Office, and the development of a mobility catalogue among the associated universities, as main milestones in this first year.

During this meeting, all representatives of the work packages and TIG had several joint sessions for making advances in their respective tasks, and there also were individual presentations of the advances made by each group during the last twelve months.

STARS EU organizes two large-scale gatherings every year in addition to those that the alliance entities may need separately: the General Conference in Spring, which this year was hosted in March by the University of Franche-Comté at Besançon (France) and in 2025 it will be hosted by the Aleksandër University of Durrës (Albania) on March 19, 20 and 21; and another follow-up meeting of the EC project, which is the one that has been held in Germany and in 2025 will be hosted by the University of La Laguna.

The complete guidelines can be download using this link, and also visiting the “Calls” section of the STARS EU website. This is a pilot call that starts in April 2024 and runs until March 2025, and afterwards it will be evaluated and improve for future editions.

This grant will provide financial support up to € 3,000 per partner involved in each project. So, if there are three partners, the grant will be 9,000 EUR. This funding can be used for several purposes related to the start-up of a project (hence the denomination “seed”), such as costs related to international meetings or writing sessions; or external consultancy services including writing proposals, proof reading or designing duties, among others.

STARS EU partners can submit a proposal for a seed grant related to researchers, early-stage researchers, innovators, PhD students and other profiles. The envisaged project must have a clear link with the STARS EU strategy and priority areas and must include, at least, three alliance partners. Each university will finance the expenses of its participants.

This is an open call, which means that there is not a closed date for receiving proposals, but in order to be eligible, the application must be submitted to starseu@org.hanze.nl at least three months before the deadline of submission of the envisaged Horizon Europe or FP10 call.

All projects will be evaluated by an assessment panel consisting of representatives of STARS EU Steering Committee, which will have in consideration the criteria expressed in the guidelines document to measure its relevance, clarity and feasibility.

This guidelines document also includes information regarding the main content of the application and the budget, and offers the possibility of reaching the STARS EU Funding Expert Group for support at starseu@hv.se.

STARS EU has launched a program of online seminars in which specialists from the various areas that are part of the alliance will present innovative projects and proposals based on science and knowledge with the potential to support regional development.

Under the name of Stars Talks, these interventions will be open to the entire public through this link on the Zoom platform, and their format will be simple: the talks will be short (between 15 and 45 minutes) and there will be time for the public to debate and ask questions. It is planned that there will be one of these STARS EU Talks every month, ten in total each year.

The dates and speakers of the first three are already known: on April 17, María José Ferreira, Director of Research and Quality of the Portuguese Footwear Research Center, will present “Portuguese footwear cluster – Innovative green materials, processes and products”; on May 15, Mikael Ericsson (University West) will speak on “Sustainable Industry– A New Thematic Interest Group”; and on June 19, José Sigut Saavedra (University of La Laguna) will speak about “Medical Diagnosis using Artificial Intelligence – Application to Retinal Images”. All of them will begin at 13:00 (CET), accessed through the Zoom link mentioned above.

These webinars have been promoted by the alliance’s Challenge Lab and the topics they address will be suggested from the different STARS EU structures. In addition to the focus on regional development, the interventions will also promote EU values and support the Green Transition and Digital Transition processes.

Green materials

María José Ferreira

On April 17, María José Ferreira, Director of the Labs and Research and Sustainability Department at CTCP, the Portuguese Footwear Technological and Research Centre, will speak about innovative green materials, processes and products in the Portuguese footwaer cluster. “Our planet is facing challenges that are causing the footwear sector to accelerate its efforts to be sustainable by adopting green and digital solutions”, the expert explains. So, there are many potential areas of intervention, and several variables remain, so significant research and innovation need to be done.

She will explain the global approach of projects like GreenShoes4.0 and BioShoes4All, along with examples of the new and “next generation” of sustainable materials and processes, including biological and biobased materials, man-made bio-based materials, material-to-material recycling, and new concepts of functional, durable, or circular handbags or footwear.

A critical step towards sustainability in footwear is doing a product life cycle assessment (LCA) to measure and reduce its environmental impact throughout its life cycle. Results and strategies to reduce the products’ carbon footprint will be introduced

Maria José Ferreira holds a graduation in Chemistry, a Master in Environmental Sciences, and a PhD in Environmental Engineering. She has experience in R&D project preparation and coordination; physical and chemical testing of footwear and related materials (leather, plastics, rubber, composites, textiles, nanomaterials); and safety at work and environment management. Her research activity is carried out at CTCP in cooperation with industrial companies and R&D entities across Europe, focusing on new materials and processes, sustainability, products with lower environmental impact and recycling.

She has coordinated for CTCP more than 60 projects. She is a member of EU TAB for the EU Product Environment Footprint development and the delegate of Portugal to the Standardisation Committees, enrolled in developing National, CEN and ISO Standards applicable to footwear and related materials.

Suistanable Industry

Mikael Ericsson.

On May 15, Mikael Ericsson will present the new Thematic Interest Group within the STARS EU alliance, that will address the Sustainable Industry. As the expert summarises, under the “Sustainable industry” concept, it can be included both production, new materials, resource-efficient process and product development, and industry close to services such as digitization, energy supply and circular business models.

Mikael Ericsson is head of the Industrial Automation Department of University West, and researcher in technology, production technology. His work is mainly focused on research interests such as robotic welding and robotic welding simulation. He also teaches robotics to engineering students.

AI for medical diagnosis

José Sigut.

José Sigut Saavedra, from University of La Laguna, will offer the last talk scheduled so far on June 19, “Medical Diagnosis using Artificial Intelligence – Application to Retinal Images”. In his dissertation, he will explain how artificial intelligence can help the medical specialist make a better diagnosis and detect a pathology at a more incipient stage.

In this case, the main focus will be on retinal images which contain very useful information for the diagnosis of eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, among others. This type of diseases can become a major public health problem. Specifically, in the Canary Islands the rate of diabetics is quite high and it is necessary to control the effect that this may have on the retina.

Jose Sigut graduated in Physics from the University of La Laguna in 1993 and received his PhD from the same university in 2002. He is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Computer and Systems Engineering and head of the multidisciplinary group MIAG (Medical Image Analysis Group) formed by members of the Department and the University Hospital of the Canary Islands.

His research activity is mainly focused on the application of Computer Vision and Deep Learning techniques to the automation of diagnosis in the medical field. As a result of this activity, he is co-author of 48 journal articles. He has also published and disseminated the results of his research in 63 conferences. In addition, he has been a visiting professor at the University of Queensland, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Genoa and the University of Iowa.

The next STAR Talks will be announced soon.
