About the TIG

The Education and Learning in and for a New Working Life (ELW) Thematic Interest Group explores the relationship between education, learning, work and professional life. The group aims to develop new approaches and models that help current and future students gain the knowledge, skills and competences needed for meaningful careers and for addressing society’s evolving demands.  ELW is built around a Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) approach, creating a transdisciplinary and cross-border arena where academics, students, practitioners, industry partners and policymakers work together to co-create knowledge and strengthen competence development.

Why it matters

Europe is facing major social, digital and green transitions that require new skills, new forms of collaboration and new ways of learning. ELW contributes to bridging the gap between societal needs and academic education by promoting research and development that connects education, learning and working life. The TIG works across three interconnected levels:
  • Individual
  • Organisational
  • Societal and regional
Through collaboration between universities and external stakeholders, ELW seeks to support innovation, lifelong learning and sustainable regional development across Europe.

What we do

ELW promotes co-creative and cross-border collaboration between researchers, educators and non-academic stakeholders to develop innovative solutions for skills and competence development. The TIG focuses on four interconnected areas:
  • Student learning in education
  • Professionals’ learning in working life
  • Transitional change and societal development
  • Organisational change in higher education institutions

Key activities

Examples of activities within ELW include:
  • Organising and contributing to international conferences on higher education, teaching and learning.
  • Supporting collaborative research and development projects between STARS EU partners and external stakeholders.
  • Developing cross-border research and educational collaborations.
  • Creating and sharing knowledge, learning models and competence-development approaches that address social, digital and green transitions.
